Diane deGroat on the Whole Book Approach

When I taught at Simmons University, I often brought students in my Picturebook course to visit artist studios. Diane deGroat was an illustrator who welcomed my classes time and again, and she was always incredibly generous with her time and expertise. During one of my last visits with a class, she showed us preliminary work for a new project that was taking her in new directions in terms of media, style, and format. The resulting picture book, The Adventures of Robo-Kid, is terrific.

Diane contacted me last fall to ask about using the Whole Book Approach in a piece she was writing about her illustration and design Take a look at the completed post (linked below), which does a great job of walking readers through all of the care and thought behind each creative decision. Then, check out Robo-Kid for yourself! Based on repeat readings with my 5- and 7-year-old sons, it’s sure to be a hit with young readers in your life.
